Product Description

Whether you're upgrading an existing surround speaker system or adapting your current listening system to accommodate the surround capabilities of DVD and HDTV programming, the VCS-10 center-channel speaker from Bose is your key to attractive, exciting home theater sound. Get more from your component system and let the whole family enjoy lifelike movie dialogue, even when people are seated off-axis from the speaker and screen.

The VCS-10 is designed to complement your existing TV or entertainment center. Its patented Compound Loaded drivers are built to deliver clear, cinema-like dialog, and its Articulated Array drivers "lock" dialogue to the screen and provide a large, even sound field.

The speaker's magnetic shielding prevents image distortion when the speaker is mounted atop a TV or computer monitor. The speaker comes with 4 pre-attached feet and 4 optional-use additional self-adhesive rubber feet.

According to Bose, standard zip cord (2-conductor, 18-gauge wire) works for most applications. If your speaker will be more than 30 feet from your audio/video receiver or amplifier, however, Bose recommends 16-gauge wire (45 feet) or 14-gauge wire (70 feet), for hookup that maintains a maximum frequency-response deviation of +/- 0.5 dB.

Summary: Great Speaker for the Price and Form Factor
Comment:
It is what it is and for the price and form factor it's a great speaker.

Due to limitations, the only place I can put a center speaker is directly at the foot of my 52" Sony LCD. Because of it, I have less than 6" of vertical height to work with and about 7" of depth. The only center speaker that fit my dimensional need (and reasonable price) is this one.

It sounds great, considering the price and form factor. It doesn't do any bass, but that's what a sub is for. My setups are mostly budget conscious, with Denon AVR-790 receiver, Polk PSW10 sub and Niles front/rear speakers. But everyting works beautifully.

For those that gave this speaker crappy review, I suspect they either don't use sub or perhaps their receiver is not doing a good job of separating the sound. If you don't have a sub and are not planning to get one, don't buy this speaker. Buy one that has bigger drivers. But for me, I'm limited in space and I have a sub, so I really like it.

Summary: Small, neat design, but very poor sound quality.

I have a question for those people that rated this item with 5 stars: did it get 5 stars because sound came out of it when you hooked it up, or did you actually compare it to ANY other speakers?? Yes, it has a small, neat design, but it sounds bad. Try comparing this speaker before you buy and I guarantee you'll immediately see what I mean. The Bose VCS-10 sounds so much worse than even the cheapest ($50) bookshelf speaker you can pick up from any of your local stores. The center channel is such an important part of your surround-sound system - I wouldn't even use this in the $30 Kmart all-in-one surround-sound system. If you want something that looks pretty, buy a nice ornament and put it on top of a decent-sounding center-channel speaker :-)

Summary: Good Speaker, Compact Design
Comment:
I've been looking at purchasing a new center channel for about a year now. I haven't been using my old center channel because it was HUGE (BIC America, old DV62CLR I believe). It dwarfed my new slim plasma TV. Once I started looking, I was surprised to find that all center channels are flippin' huge! Come on people! Who wants a speaker so large that it makes your TV look like a computer monitor? I eventually turned to Bose since they had the only center channel with a low profile. Plus, it matches my two front channel speakers quite nicely in appearance (I have Bose 301, series IV).

I'll have to admit, I was very hesitant to buy this speaker since many have given it bad reviews. But I decided to bite the bullet and give it a shot based on my enjoyment of my 301s. I'll have to admit, I wasn't disappointed at all in the sound.

For those people out there complaining about lack of bass on this speaker, remember, it's a center channel not a subwoofer. It's main purpose is movie dialogue! Your front speakers and subwoofer are meant to handle the heavy end of the sound spectrum. That being said, I adjusted the EQ on the center channel to 0dB on the low end and then put anywhere from 1-2.5dB on the higher frequencies. I also took some high end dBs off of my 301s.

After some tweaking I was very pleased with this EQ setup. The three front speakers complimented each other very well and the VCS-10 easily handles the higher frequencies that my 301s used to. Even playing music, I can hear symbols and nuances that I've never heard before.

I would highly recommend this speaker based on my limited use and overall first impression of the appearance and sound output. If you're looking for a slim line center channel that will handle your high frequency needs and not block the view of your TV, get the VCS-10. You won't be disappointed. I know I wasn't!

Summary: A great speaker
Comment:
Based on the reviews that I saw on this site and elsewhere on the internet, I was hesitant about buying this speaker. However, I received the Bose 161 speakers as a gift and was very pleased with the sound, so decided to take a risk on the VCS-10. I was not disappointed.

I got rid of the old center channel speaker and initially noticed that the voices were somewhat muffled as other reviewers had indicated, but once I calibrated the speaker, I got great sound. Since there were so many very negative scathing reviews, I wanted to provide another positive prospective.

This speaker has a tiny footprint and is placed below my HDTV on its original stand and it doesn't block any of the screen. The voices sound crisp and cleaer. Also the speaker has good volume. I had been looking for a new center channel speaker to replace the ones that came with my Sony receiver and now I'm done looking.

I'm not an audiophile per say, but I am picky. This speaker delivered on all that I expected of it. I'm sure that there are better speakers than this (the only reason that I didn't give it 5 stars), but this is a great speaker and I am extremely happy with it.

Comment:
The Perfect compliment to my home theater system. I have a very basic setup, my two 3 way Bose bookshelf speakers and now this center speaker, and as Bose has always advertised, they fill the room with crisp clear, movie theater sound with only three speakers. Well worth the investment. Word of warning, a lot of people have negatively reviewed this speaker, IF YOUR HOME THEATER SYSTEMS DOES NOT HAVE A BIG ENOUGH AMP THIS SPEAKER WILL NOT FUNCTION CORRECTLY. A lot of people have said that the speaker is really quiet, keep two things in mind, when setup properly a center speaker is meant to COMPLIMENT the sound of your other speakers giving you a full acoustic range, its not meant to be used as a PRIMARY speaker, also if you have it hooked up with cheap "walmart" speaker wire, don't expect the product to function to the best of its ability.
