Product Description

Add a pair of speakers in the bedroom, in the kitchen, in the garage or on the patio. JBL On Air Control 2.4G wireless speaker system combines high-performance sound quality with wireless-installation convenience. The unit includes a pair of wall-mountable loudspeakers that incorporate a wireless transceiver and amplifier, a transmitter/receiver module, and a remote control. This system is ideal for a host of wireless-speaker applications, including use as the surround channels in a multichannel home theater, as a second-room music system, and as a high-quality wireless speaker system for computers and digital music players. The On Air Control 2.4G utilizes the 2.4GHz frequency range for interference-free transmission, and the transmitter/receiver module can be used with up to two pairs of JBL On Air speakers. The active speaker system includes a mini-jack input for connection to a second local audio source and a subwoofer output that enables the speakers to be used as part of a 2.1-channel satellite/subwoofer audio system. The 100mm polylaminate woofer produces rich, deep bass response, while the 12mm titanium-laminate tweeter delivers sparkling, clear high frequencies throughout the listening room. Easy-to-use wall brackets are included.

Open box or not they looked new and performed like new but still had a good savings. Would do again and again.

Summary: JBL Wireless (well...semi-wireless) Speakers
Comment:
These JBL 2.4G Speakers were almost exactly what I was looking for. I wanted wirless speakers to play my digital music from my computer out by the pool. Although they are wireless from the computer, you still have to plug one speaker into a three-pronged outlet. The second speaker is connected via speaker wire to the primary speaker making them not truly wireless.
However, I have an outlet outside and have set up the speakers on opposite sides and the sound quality is excellent. Great high notes and superb bass power coming from the speakers. I thoroughly enjoy them and recommend them.
I previewed them at Frye's electronics and they were retailing for $300. As I walked around the store, I checked Amazon.com on my phone and saw the same speaker set selling for $160. As I placed my order online, I thanked the salesman for his time and awaited delivery of my speakers and received them 4 days later.

Setup was pretty easy once I realized not all the wires in the package had to be used. Sorted them out then it was just plug & play on my iMac. Fantastic sound. I'd recommend this product to anyone!

Summary: Great Sound, Lousy Operation
Comment:
Once I got the speakers working they sounded great. However, setup, and on-going usage is a real nuisance.

First, it took a long time to figure out that there has to be a direct line of sight path between the transmitter and the active speaker.

Then there are the operational issues:
1. The transmitter, my Pioneer receiver, and active speaker seem to have to be turned on in a specific order. I can't remember what that is, but I now leave on the transmitter and speaker all the time.
2. Once music has stopped play you must mute the active speaker or it loses contact with the transmitter.
3. Once the music has stopped, you must turn off the receiver or the transmitter loses touch with the speaker.
4. The remote for the active speaker is also a very narrow direct line of sight, and its range is not very good.

While I have finally figured out how to make the setup work, and how to keep it working, I would not buy these wireless speakers another time.

Summary: They sound good and work fine if you know what you're getting
Comment:
I worried about getting these because of the bad reviews. Many of the reviewers didn't understand what they were buying.
You get a transmitter with a power supply that plugs into the wall. You get a speaker with built-in amp that has another power supply plugged into the wall. You get a second speaker that is cabled to the first.
The transmitter gets it's signal via 2 RCA connectors or an iPhone headset type jack.
I bought these to play Pandora using my iPhone in several rooms. I added a splitter so the signal would serve a local Bose player and the remote speakers. It all works just fine; I'm buying a second pair.
If you expect some light little battery powered thing you can stick anywhere, this isn't it. If anything, it's overbuilt and designed for component audio type people which is fine for me.
Downsides: 1. heavy, bulky in-line power supplies. 2. I wish it could take more kinds of signal; I'd try them on the digital or optical audio out from my TV.
I'm amending this in July '10 because signal weakness is a bigger obstacle than I previously realized. Even getting the signal two rooms away is difficult.
